One of the central topics of the XI Summer Colloquium on Plant Ecophysiology will be how plants may be affected in their physiology by climate changes that are already occurring. Among the invited lecturers are: Rajeev Arora (Iowa State University, USA), Marilyn Ball (Australian National University, Australia), Rob Brooker (James Hutton Institute, UK), Nicolás Franck (Universidad de Chile), Jorge Gago (U. Islas Baleares, Spain), Ragan Callaway (U. Montana), Leopoldo García Sancho (U. Complutense de Madrid, Spain), Brad Butterfield (Northern Arizona University), Chris Lortie (York University, Canada), Richard Michalet (Université d’Bordeaux, France), Bruce Osborne (University College Dublin, Ireland), and Francisco Pugnaire (EEZA-CSIC, Spain). The Colloquium consists in lectures, a symposium on “Plant Interactions in a changing world” organizedby Dr. Lohengrin Cavieres (U. de Concepción, Chile) and short oral presentations.
The Summer Colloquium on Plat Ecophysiology is organized by Dr. Luis Corcuera (U. de Concepción, Chile) and Dr. Nicolás Franck (U. de Chile). It has the support of Universidad de Concepción, Universidad de La Frontera , and Instituto de Ecología y Biodiversidad. A new international, graduate level course on “Plant Ecophysiology in a Warmer and Drier World” will be offered from January 6-16, 2016 at the Biological Station Parque Katalapi of Universidad de Concepción. This course is organized by Drs. Lohengrin Cavieres (Universidad de Concepción, IEB, Chile), Luis J. Corcuera (Universidad de Concepción, Chile), León A. Bravo (Universidad de La Frontera, Chile), and Hans Lambers (University of Western Australia). The sutudent that aprove the course could receive an official certificate from Universidad de Concepción or Universidad de La Frontera. The general topic of the course refers to how plants may be affected in its physiology and performance by climate changes. There will be great emphasis on plant stress physiology. The course includes lectures, seminars, and presentation of research projects. Ricardo Hernández and his family are well and safe
The recent eruptions of Volcán Calbuco have caused concern amont collaborators and visitors of Parque Katalapi. We can now inforrm with great relief that no damage has been produced in the park. Noly some ash has been falling. Ricardo Hernández and his family are well and safe. Them and their house have not suffered any damage. The forest and park infrastructure have not been affected either.
Katalapi is 23 km away (in straight line) from Volcán Calbuco. Therefore is outside of the evacuation zone. In addition, between Volcan Calbuco and Katalapi there is a natural barrier: Cordillera de Quillaipe (see map). For these reasons and because the prevailing winds are favorable for Katalapi, it is unlikely that the park would be significantly affected. There is no possibility that lahars and lava flows in this area. Ashes have been mainly directed by winds towards the North-Eastn and Argentina. Katalapi is to the South of Volcan Calbuco.
Therefore, activities in Katalapi have not been affected and will continue according to planning. Should it change, it will be inforrmed through this web page
The most international version of the Summer Course of Plant Ecophysiology in Katalapi Park finished on January 16, 2015. More than ever, students and professors came from far away continents, leaving Chileans as a minority. Well known scientists were the lecturers of the course. They came from Australia (2), Brazil (1), Ireland (1), New Zealand (1), Switzerland (1), and Chile (4). Students came from 8 countries: Australia (3) Argentina (2), Brazil (4), Canadá (2), USA (1), Colombia (1), México (4), and Chile (8). During the 10 days of the course all activities were performed in English, including students presentations.
Each year, the course deals with different aspect of Plant Ecophysiology. This year was on the relation of ecophysiological and ecological processes. In previous years, the emphasis was on Root Ecophysiology, Photosynthesis Ecophysiology, Plant Soil Interactions, and Plant Stress Ecophysiology. This summer the course was centered on “Forest Ecophysiology: from cells to ecosystems”. This summer course is an official activity of the Graduate School of Universidad de Concepción. In addition it had the collaboration and sponsorship of Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB) and the Center for Ecological Research of the Patagonia (CIEP). Since this is an advanced graduate level course, most of the students are enrolled in PhD or Masters Programs. Due to the success of this experience, we have decided to offer in January 2016 a new course on“Plant Ecophysiology in a Warmer and Drier World”.
The course is an intensive experience, with 10 days of lectures, seminars and preparation of research projects. It requires dedication, resistance, social skills, and patience to live immersed in a world class plant ecophysiological environment. Now available in Katalapi Park´s website, you can download the classic “Children´s Green Book”. Katalapi board members Ana María Vliegenthart and Elisa Corcuera wrote the book in 1995, it was illustrated by Adrian Menjibar, and originally edited thanks to the support of UNICEF and Casa de la Paz. The book, which was updated and re-edited in 2010 and 2012, reached a total issue of 7,000, which is sold out once again. However, it can now be downloaded in digital format from our website.
The book addresses mainstream environmental issues such as biodiversity reduction, waste, air or water; explains the them in simple terms, illustrates them with humour-filled drawings, and invites children to do entertaining activities to help reduce our impact upon the environment. Originally aimed at children 7-11 years old, we have received numerous testimonies indicating that the book charms a much greater spectrum of ages.
We thank all the people and institutions that have been involved in this project through the years, specially Ximena Abogabir, for nurturing the idea and for her careful editing; Adrian for his wonderful drawings; and Verónica Zurita, the designer who rescued the originals, made at a time when digital format was not yet fully fledged, and transformed them to the format that is now made available to all of you; and to UNICEF, Casa de la Paz and Parque Katalapi for freeing it so that you may now all access it in our Didactic Materials web page section.
